They sent the seaman recruits
in to have their teeth checked. Grandpa remembers one Seaman had quite a few
cavities and bad gums. The service dentist asked him if he had been doing
anything to improve his dental health.
"My civilian dentist
told me to use dental floss. I have been chewing it for a year, but I guess it
hasn't done me any good!"
… replied the Seaman.
September 1965, Navy boot camp, San Diego, company 521. We had a sailor who was from back East, couldn't read or write. His teeth were all rotten. He went to the base dentist, they pulled every tooth and sent him back to our company, mouth bleeding. Our CC was really pissed and took the sailor back to the infirmary. He was gone for a couple of days. When he returned we had to take turns watching him for proper medical treatment. We formed a group to try to teach him how to read or write. He was hurting for several days. Our CC made sure he was taken care of.
