A US Navy
Destroyer had pulled up to an AO during UNREPS to top off underway. After the
lines had been received and the gas had been pumped the Skipper had noted the
Oiler had a sign on its port side that read,
“Welcome
alongside, Our ship is Second to None!”
A week
later the same US Destroyer pulled up alongside once again for UNREPS. This
time the Skipper of the oiler had noted on the Starboard side of the Destroyer
it read,
“We are
the Proud, the men of the USS NONE!”
Remember refueling underway. Fun times. Amazing how much bunker C can come out of a sounding tube. Gets deep quick.
ReplyDeleteLove it - Our Skipper on The Larry Boat (USS Lawrence DDG-4) - way back in the 80’s - told us sometimes ships would some pretty outrageous things during UNREP’s - one used to our a sailor dressed as a little old lady - in a rocking chair - and out of the way - pretending to knit - while UNREPING....
ReplyDeleteOnce on the Rockbridge we did an unrep practice with an oiler, after we received some bunker-c, we broke down our hoses, turned away and came alongside again, connected the hoses on our ship again. The "A" Div officer ordered the fuel pumps on before the oiler had connected their side of the hose and we sprayed the side and deck of the oiler with the bunker-c they sent us. Then we had to send a working party over to clean the mess up.
